Veterans Day was on November 11. If you did not serve in the military, or if veterans are just a part of your patient load, this day may not cross your mind. However, it’s a good day to recognize the huge sacrifice these men and women have made so that we can be free.
Veterans have a higher risk of developing many illnesses than non-military individuals. There are certain cancers and diseases, like Type II Diabetes and Parkinson’s Disease, that are linked to Agent Orange exposure. This toxic chemical was used to clear trees and plants during the Vietnam War. The men and women who are Vietnam Veterans are also at risk for Hepatitis C.
Additionally, many veterans suffer from PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) which often has accompanying side-effects, including depression, grief, anxiety and more. Other veterans may have physical injuries from explosions, accidents, or battle wounds. These are the occupational hazards that these men and women face when fighting to protect our country and others around the world.
This Veterans Day, we hope you took a moment to say “thank you for your service” to every veteran you know or see.
